Grand Mercure Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur
Grand Mercure Bukit Bintang explores the relationship between Malaysian heritage and contemporary design through woven artworks inspired by Bunga Pecah Lapan, a traditional Malaysian Songket motif. In collaboration with Bluwater Studio, BYO Living translated the characteristic floral pattern into contemporary weaving panels, bringing cultural references into a modern hospitality environment.

The Challenges
The challenge was to reinterpret a traditional Songket motif while maintaining its recognisable character within a contemporary design language. The pattern needed to be adapted to the scale and structure of woven panels without losing the craftsmanship and cultural reference behind the original motif.
An open-grid weaving inspired by the Bunga Pecah Lapan Songket motif, using contrasting densities, colours, and intersecting lines to reinterpret its geometric character. The motif is abstracted and enlarged into a contemporary woven expression suited to an architectural scale.

The Solutions
BYO Living developed the Bunga Pecah Lapan motif into contemporary woven panels, refining its forms and proportions to suit the architectural application. Through material experimentation and handcrafting, the traditional pattern was given a new expression while retaining its connection to Malaysian cultural heritage.
