Robot & Co introduces a new dining concept that integrates sustainability through the use of natural rattan. BYO Living selected a distinctive species of Kalimantan rattan, naturally characterized by a silica-rich surface that enhances its durability and tensile strength. The material brings together the inherent qualities of local craftsmanship and natural materiality within a contemporary dining environment.

The Challenges
The project required a natural material that could support the demands of a dining environment while maintaining its raw character. The selection of rattan needed to consider durability, tensile strength, and its ability to withstand varying environmental conditions.
A fine vertical rattan weave that creates a layered, semi-transparent surface while highlighting the natural texture and tonal variation of the material.

The Solutions
BYO Living worked with the naturally durable Kalimantan rattan, utilizing its silica-rich outer surface as part of the material strategy. Rather than heavily modifying the material, the project preserves its natural characteristics while applying it through handcrafted weaving to create a functional and sustainable architectural element.
